WEEKEND REVIEW

Scintillating weekend action across the globe comes to an end. As usual, the football community was treated a feast over the past few days. As is synonymous with weekends, it is always packed with a great number of varieties of football matches to choose, this weekend was not any different. From the encounter at the King power stadium, to the clash at Pamplona to the late drama at Santiago Bernabeu, to the annihilation at the Allianz Arena to the clash at Old trafford to the Turin derby in Italy and to the clash at Parc des Princes..it truly was an exhilarating weekend.
Starting off in Spain was an early kick off between Osasuna and Barcelona. Usually a tricky ground to play although this time around Osasuna were rooted to the bottom of the standings. The Catalans were frustrated for large spells of the match, a combination of great defending, goalkeeping and poor finishing ensured we finished the 1st period goalless. At that point, Barcelona could be forgiven for feeling a little bit panicky, considering their last 3 matches in La liga finished in draws. Mr Dependable (Lionel Messi) came to the fore in the 2nd period. He was involved in the opening goal by Luis Suarez before wrapping up proceedings with a superb brace of his own.
In Germany, It was business as usual for the Bavarians. Bayern Munich stormed to an emphatic 5-0 win over Wolfsburg. Leipzig the table toppers had earlier in the weekend slipped against bottom side Ingolstadt. The onus was on Bayern to capitalize and they most definitely did. Lewandowski with a brace, Arjen Robben, Douglas Costa and surprise surprise Thomas Muller were on the score sheet. Thomas Muller with that goal breaks his duck for the season, his first Bundesliga goal this campaign.
Borussia Dortmund continue to underwhelm ever so slightly in the league. This time against Koln could very easily have ended in defeat bar a late equaliser from Marco Reus.
Arsenal triumphed against Stoke City at the Emirates. They had to do it the hard way, coming from behind to eventually earn a comfortable 3-1 victory. Walcott, Ozil and Iwobi were all on target.
Leicester city blitzed past Manchester City, 2 goals up after 5 minutes, and 3-0 after 20 minutes. Jamie Vardy helped himself to a hattrick, and Andy King scored a stunner. Kolarov and Nolito responded with 2 late consolation goals. On this evidence, it seems Manchester City need more time to soak in Guardiola's philosophy.
Over to the the match at the Santiago Bernabeu. A much changed Madrid side were in danger of dropping points. After Morata opened the scoring with a stunner, Deportivo responded with a quick fire double from Joselu, Mariano equalised late on for Madrid. Step forward Mr Reliable (Sergio Ramos) with yet another late late header to win it for Madrid.
At Stamford Bridge, Diego Costa ensured Chelsea returned to the top of the league. It was Chelsea's 9th consecutive win, now that's stuff of champions. This was Diego Costa's 12th goal of the league campaign. A stunning left footed finish into the top left corner.
Manchester United vs Tottenham was settled by a Mkhitaryn. An all action match ended 1-0, a stunner from Mkhitaryn who later departed with an injury. The Armenian scoring his 2nd goal in as many games in the process.
The Turin derby ended in favour of Juventus. Higuain helping himself to a brace. Belotti had given the hosts the lead with his 11th goal of the league campaign. A brace from Higuain and one from Pjanic ensured Juve left with all 3 points and the bragging rights.
The game at Anfield needed Origi to rescue a point for the Reds after both teams had committed dreadful mistakes at the back. In the process, netting in the 4th consecutive game for Liverpool. Lallana opened the scoring, Payet equalised through a freekick, Antonio put Westham in front before Origi equalised after Randolph had dropped a Mane's cross. 2-2 it ended.
Cavani was at the double to spare Psg's blushes after going 2 nil down at half time to Nice  After the interval, Cavani scored twice in the opening 15 minutes roaring Psg back into the contest. There were no further goals, it ended all square.

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE BETTING PREVIEW

>> Benfica vs Napoli:
Neither team look solid in defence. Napoli will advance in case of a draw as they have the same number of points with Benfica and won 4-2 at home. GONE BUT NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN!!

The world awoke to a heartrending news. The kind of news that sends shivers down one's spine. The team, Associacao Chapecoense De Futebol (ACF) were due to play the 1st leg of the Copa Sudamericana final against Atletico National but unfortunately on the 28th day of November 2018, the charter flight carrying the 1st team crashed on a mountainside in Colombia. The match was billed to be the biggest match in the history of Chapecoense. 77 passengers (Staff and players from the club) were on board the flight, only 6 survived with injuries of which 3 were Chapecoense players.
The LaMia Airlines Flight 2933 is said to have crashed as it approached Medellin, Colombia due to an electrical failure and possibly lack of fuel. The surviving players were left back Alan Ruschel, backup goalkeeper Follmann (a leg had to be amputated due to injuries sustained), center back Neto, and goalkeeper Danilo died on his way to the hospital. 9 players did not travel.
As a result of the crash, the 2016 Copa Sudamericana final has been suspended indefinitely. Atletico Nacional of Colombia (their opponents in the final) have made a request to the governing body that Chapecoense be awarded the trophy. Nivaldo (goalkeeper), clearly devastated, immediately announced his retirement from football.
Brazilian Clubs in solidarity have agreed to loan players to them for free and a request has been sent to the Brazilian FA for the club to be immune from relegation for the next 3 years.
It was indeed shocking, tragic and excruciating. Many of the locals camped at the club's stadium until the team's bodies arrived.
It leaves the city dejected and Brazil as a nation have been plunged into distress. It has been a horrendous last few years for Brazil: debacle in the 2014 World Cup, political upheaval, zika virus epidemic, birth defect microcephaly, bribery and scandals at Petrobras, impeachment of President Dilma Rouseff and a general recession in the country. The club represented a tight, well-organised and competent unit. It stood out as a club punching above its weight, a hope of a nation not just a city. Founded in 1973, it entered Brazil's 4th division by 2009, and by 2014 was in Brazil's Seria A, surpassing all expectations.
Several clubs (Barcelona, Real madrid etc observed silence at their training grounds in a show of empathy, minute silence were held in Efl Quarter final matches in England, Al Jazira, Al shabaab also held minute silences), also numerous players (Cavani dedicated his 100th Psg goal to Chapecoence, David Luiz paid tribute to former teammates who lost their lives, Neymar, poured out his heart on his instagram page).
Reactions:
Pele: 'Brazilian football is in mourning. It is such a tragic loss. My sincere condolences to the family of the deceased. Rest in Peace'.
Fifa president Gianni Infantino: 'This is a very, very sad day for football. At this difficult time our thoughts are with the victim, families and friends. Fifa would like to extend its most heartfelt condolences to the fans of Chapecoense, the football community, and media organisations concerned in Brazil'.
Rooney: 'Sad news to wake up to today. Thoughts are with @ChapecoenseReal and their family and friends.
Ronaldinho: 'Power to the families and friends of all people who were on this plane. May God comfort you in this time of grief'.
Neymar:  'Impossible to believe in this tragedy, impossible to believe in the event, impossible to believe that the plane crashed, impossible to believe that athletes, humans were on this plane, impossible to believe that these people left their families .. IS IMPOSSIBLE TO BELIEVE !!! Today the World cries, but heaven rejoices in receiving Champions. My feelings to all family and friends' Forca Chape.
So many more tributes have been pouring in from all over the globe. Their story was a fantastic fairytale with a tragic end.
FORCA CHAPE!!! Forever in our hearts.

TRANSFER NEWS

>> Jose Mourinho wants willian reunion: Willian has been on the fringes of 1st team football since Conte took over at Stamford Bridge. Mourinho could definitely do with Willian's pace at Manchester United.

>> Barcelona monitoring Ivanovic situation: It is no secret that Barcelona are in the market for a Right Back to plug the gap created by the departure of Daniel Alves. Barcelona have been operating with 1 Right Back all season (Sergi Roberto), with Aleix Vidal failing to impress and hence frozen out. Ivanovic represents a viable option, a veteran, relatively cheap and not cup tied (due to Chelsea's absense in Europe).

>> Barcelona scouts Victor Moses: The Nigerian's good performances for Chelsea this season as a Right Wing Back has not gone unnoticed. He is yet another name added to the ever growing list of potential Right Back options for Barcelona.

>>  Manchester City eye Virgil Van Dijk: The Southampton Netherlands international has reportedly caught the eye of Pep Guardiola. Pep views him as a long term replacement for the injury prone Vincent Kompany. Arsenal amd Manchester United are also rumoured to be monitoring.

>> Fenerbahce keeping tabs on Ben Arfa: The Turkish club are reported to be monitoring Hatem Ben Arfa's situation at PSG. Th French winger has seen little game time under Unai Emery and as a result he could soon be on the move yet again.

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE RECAP

Europe's top tier competition provided us with scintillating clashes this past midweek. The Champions League group stage never ceases to produce enthralling encounters and a bit of shock every now and then. As the group stage draws to a close, we have a clearer picture of the standings as some teams have confirmed their progress to the next round, some drop to the lower competition (Europa League), a few others have already been eliminated entirely.

CSKA Moscow and Bayer Leverkusen played out a 1-1 draw, a result which was good enough for Leverkusen to progress to the knockout stage. Kevin Volland gave the Germans the lead, Bibras Natcho converted from 12 yards to draw the game level. Leverkusen are through to the next round as runners-up due to Tottenham's loss at Monaco later in the day.

The Monaco Tottenham match eneded in disappointment for spurs, losing 2-1 and subsequently eliminated from the Champions League. It was yet another lackluster display from Tottenham, deservedly beaten by Monaco on the night. Sidibe headed Monaco in front, Kane equalized, Lemar had the final say with an emphatic finish. Tottenham's capitulation in the group stage can be attributed to several factors such as Mauricio Pochettino's bewildering decision to rest players, decision to play home games at Wembley or simply maybe they were not good enough when it mattered most.

Leicester city are through to the next round as group winners after defeating Club Brugge 2-1 at the King power stadium. Okazaki opened the scoring, Mahrez doubled Leicester's lead from the spot before Izquierdo pulled one back for the visitors to ensure a tense finale to the game. The fairy-tale continues for Leicester.

Ronaldo returned to his old stomping ground in the Sporting Lisbon vs Real Madrid clash. Raphael Varane had earlier given Madrid the lead before Adrien Silva drew Sporting level by converting from the spot. Benzema had the final say, expertly heading in from a Ramos cross 5 minutes from time. Sporting did a good job of keeping Ronaldo fairly quiet on the night. With the result, battle for top spot is still up for grabs between Madrid and Dortmund.

It was an intense encounter at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium between Sevilla and Juventus. Juventus triumphed 3-1 but it was not all smooth sailing. Sevilla took the lead through Nico Pareja and Sampaoli's men where on top in the early exchange thanks to their intensity. Then things turned sour as Franco Vazquez picked up 2 yellow cards to earn his matching orders. Bonucci equalized from the spot on the stroke of half time. In the 2nd period, Juve pressed on and eventually won it late on through strikes from Bonucci and Mandzukic.

The most thrilling encounter of match day 5 played out at the Signal Iduna Park in the match between Borussia Dortmund and Legia Warzsawa. A scarcely believable scoreline of 8-4 ensued. The match was definitely fun for the neutrals but not one Tuchel would have been too pleased with. Conceding 4 goals is never a good thing, the defence would have to tighten up if Dortmund are to make it into the deep end of the competition. Records were shattered left right and center such as Most goals scored in a single Champions League match, first time an away team scored 4 goals and still lost, quickest double in Champions League history by Kagawa etc. This was as open and end to end as a football match can be.

The Besiktas and Benfica clash was definitely not low on entertainment. Besiktas found themselves 3-0 down after just 31 minutes. Few could have foreseen what came next. Reminiscent of the great clash at Istanbul between Ac Milan and Liverpool, a great turn around was in store. A resurgent Besiktas emerged for the 2nd period and successfully turned it around and they did it in quite some style. Tosun started the comeback with an acrobatic volley, Queresma converted a spotkick and produced a rabona cross for Aboubakar to net the 3rd and equalizing goal a minute from time. 3-3 it ended.

Rostov provided us with the biggest shock of the round. The Russians edging a five goal thriller. Douglas Costa opened the scoring for Bayern, his loose ball led to Azmoun leveling for Rostov, Poloz turned the game on it head by converting a penalty kick, Bernat responded for the Bavarians but it would be Noboa that would ultimately have the final say. Winning it in style by curling a spectacular freekick. As a result, Bayern will finish in 2nd place, behind Atletico Madrid. Back to the drawing board for Ancelotti and Bayern.

Arsenal and Psg's match ended in a 2-2 draw. Cavani deservedly opened the scoring for Psg, Giroud drew Arsenal level from the spot just before the half time break. An own goal from Marco Verratti put Arsenal infront. Lucas struck the bar with a wonderful freekick, he eventually leveled matters for Psg via a deflection from Iwobi. Cavani spurned 2 glorious opportunities to seal victory. Consequently Psg top the pool due to a superior head to head. A point was the least Psg deserved, clearly superior to the Gunners on the night.

Atletico Madrid seal top spot with a 2-0 victory over Psv. They are the only team with a 100% record in the champions league this season.Kevin Gameiro produced an emphatic finish, and Griezmann doubled the lead to give Atletico Madrid a deserved win and a moral booster after the defeat in the derby to Real Madrid.

Manchester city were held at Borussia Monchengladbach. Pep Guardiola tinkered with his tactics, deploying an interesting looking 3-2-4-1 formation. Nevertheless it did not have the desired effect with Monchengladbach taking the lead through Raffael. David Silva slid home for the equaliser. This result sees Manchester City through to the next round but as runners up behind Barcelona.

Messi at the double, as Barcelona see off Celtic 2-0. The Argentine international made his comeback from illness and immediately made his presence felt with his 8th and 9th goal in the group stage. He opened the scoring with a volley courtesy of Neymar's perfectly weighted lobbed pass. In the 2nd period he put the game to bed, converting a penalty kick won by Suarez. As a result, Barcelona advance as group winners.
