There is something about Real Sociedad and their home ground the Anoeta. Quite frankly, to emerge unscathed from the trip you definitely have to bring your A game. Atletico Madrid never really looked at the height of their powers, culminating in Kevin Gameiro missing a guilt edged opportunity in the first half. Going into the break and both teams had drawn a blank.
The 2nd interval commenced with both teams slugging it out in what was proving so far to be a balanced encounter. Then came the decisive moment, penalty kick to Real Sociedad and up stepped Carlos Vela nonchalantly rolling to the bottom corner: cool as you like. In all honesty, Atletico Madrid never really seemed like clawing their way back into the contest, and a subsequent 2nd goal followed for Real Sociedad, yet another penalty kick converted by Willian Jose this time. That is how it stayed, a loss for Atletico Madrid and the hosts were full value for their win.
Diego Simeone rightly said in his post match conference, "we were 2nd best for most of the game and can have no complaints on the officiating". So back to the drawing board El Cholo as the international break beckons.
